Mastitis, Metritis and diarrhea in cattle

The most common problems are mastitis in cows and diarrhea in calves

All these problems, in the first place, of course, are related to conditions of housing and hygiene. In the body of the animal, there are many bacteria that are in different relationships with it. Most of the microflora are microorganisms that exist with the animal based on symbiosis and mutual benefit. However, in modern livestock farming, one of the causes of diseases such as mastitis and metritis in cows and diarrhea in calves in the milk period is high pathogen pressure (E.coli, Cryptosporidia, etc.).

With a decrease in the body’s resistance under the action of various endogenous and exogenous factors, an increase in the virulence of conditionally pathogenic microorganisms occurs. As a result, the incidence of a wide range of diseases such as mammary inflammation and diarrhea, strongly increases.

Mastitis of cows causes significant economic damage to dairy farming, due to decreased milk production and a decrease in milk quality. In addition, the disease of mastitis of cows is accompanied by general depression, a decrease and loss of appetite, thirst and anxiety. All together further aggravating the reduction in performance.

Another disease whose incidence strongly depends on the general health status of the animal is cryptosporidiosis in calves. This acute or subacute proceeding zooanthroponotic disease caused by the protozoans of the family Cryptosporidiidae, manifested by a lesion of the gastrointestinal canal and a violation of its digestive and absorptive function.

Sick calves refuse to feed, diarrhea develops, dehydration occurs. Animals lose weight and die in an unfavorable course of invasion. Furthermore, diarrhea is a main precursor for the occurrence of respiratory diseases in calves, as the resulting dehydration reduces the natural defense mechanisms of the respiratory epithelium.
